Summer Safe Procedures – Part 1: THERMAGE

During the summer months, there are not many cosmetic procedures I would recommend for our patients. This is due to the high intensity UV light our skin is exposed to on a daily basis, which may cause a multitude of side effects and unwanted results related to your procedure. But, do not worry!!! Here at Park Ave. Derm. we perform a handful of procedures that are actually sun safe and able to be performed in the midst of the summer by either myself (Dr. Glodny) or Dr. Warner. This will be the upcoming topic for our blog series reviewing those treatments able to be performed over the summer at Park Ave. Derm. The first we will be covering is the Thermage procedure. We hope you enjoy:

Here at Park Avenue Dermatology, I frequently recommend Thermage to my patients as a safe and effective treatment for sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. What is Thermage? Thermage is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten existing collagen fibers. It’s a non-invasive alternative to facelift surgery, and it can be used on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and thighs.

How does Thermage work?

a Thermage treatment, a handheld device delivers radiofrequency energy to the deep layers of your skin. The energy heats the collagen fibers, causing them to contract and tighten. At the same time, the heat stimulates the production of new collagen, which further improves the skin’s texture and elasticity. Thermage is unique because it uses a patented technology called Comfort Pulse Technology (CPT), which delivers the radiofrequency energy in a series of short bursts interspersed with cooling intervals. This helps to minimize discomfort and improve patient comfort.

Since no skin is broken during the procedure it is absolutely sun safe. You can leave the office right after your procedure and not worry about your results being hampered.

What can you expect during a Thermage treatment?

Thermage is a non-invasive procedure that requires no downtime. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment with minimal redness. During the treatment, you’ll feel a warm sensation as the energy is delivered to your skin. Some patients may experience mild discomfort, but this is usually well-tolerated.

At any point during a Thermage treatment if you feel pain, be sure to inform your dermatologist so the energies can be adjusted. Unlike other skin tightening treatments such as Ulthera (ultra sound technology), you should not experience significant pain.

The length of the treatment depends on the area being treated, but it typically takes about an hour to an hour and half for the face/neck. Other areas that can be treated include, the skin around the eyes, abdominal area, buttocks and etc.

What are the results of Thermage?

You’ll see some immediate results after the treatment, but the full effects of Thermage will develop gradually over the next few months as your skin produces new collagen. Maximal effect typically is seen 5-6 months post procedure. Thermage can help to tighten and smooth your skin, reducing the appearance of sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. The results can last for up to two years, and some patients opt for maintenance treatments to prolong the effects.

Is Thermage right for you?

Thermage is a safe and effective treatment for most patients who want to improve the appearance of their skin without surgery. However, it’s important to have a consultation with a qualified dermatologist to determine if Thermage is right for you
