Sclerotherapy

Understanding Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used primarily to treat spider veins and other small- to medium-sized enlarged blood vessels on the lower extremities. At Park Ave Derm, we utilize 1% liquid Polidocanol (Asclera) to effectively diminish the appearance of these vascular conditions. This solution works by irritating the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and eventually fade from view.

What Is Sclerotherapy Used for?

In our office, sclerotherapy is primarily used for the treatment of spider veins, which are small, red or blue veins that are often visible just beneath the skin’s surface. While they are usually harmless, many patients seek NY spider vein treatment for cosmetic reasons.

Spider veins may be found anywhere on the body, they most often develop on the legs. Sclerotherapy is typically the first-line treatment for spider veins, your dermatologist may choose other treatments for your veins. For example, at Park Ave Derm we also use Nd:YAG laser and intense pulse light (IPL) for the treatment of specific types of vascular concerns.

What to Expect During Your NY Sclerotherapy Visit

Consultation

Before your treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our experienced dermatologists. During this appointment, we will discuss your medical history, evaluate the veins in question, and determine if sclerotherapy is the best treatment for your concerns. You will receive specific instructions about preparing for your treatment and aftercare, including bringing compression socks/stockings with you to your appointment.

The Procedure

On the day of your treatment, here’s what you can expect:

  1. Preparation: You will be asked to wear comfortable clothing, and the treatment area will be cleaned and marked.
  2. Injection: Using a very fine needle, our dermatologist will inject the 1% Polidocanol solution directly into the affected veins. The procedure typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the number and size of veins being treated.
  3. Post-Treatment Care: After the injections, compression stockings must be worn to ensure that your treatment is as effective as possible. It is recommended that you wear your compression garments for 1 week after your procedure. Additionally keeping your legs elevated when you sleep and sit will also help to ensure your procedure is successful.

Aftercare Instructions

Post-procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort, bruising, or swelling in the treated areas.

Our team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, including:

  • Wear compression stockings for 1 week after your procedure as often as you can throughout the day
  • Avoid prolonged standing or sitting
  • Engage in light activities to promote circulation
  • Avoid direct sunlight exposure onto the treated areas
  • Avoid excessive exercise for 1 week after the procedure
