It’s important to protect your skin from UV rays regardless of the weather or season. However, most people experience increased sun exposure this time of year. With the summer months upon us, choosing good sunscreens and applying them properly will go a long way toward preserving the health and beauty of your skin.
Dr. Bradley Glodny with Park Avenue Dermatology is a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in skin cancer and sun damage treatment. Here are five products recommended by Dr. Glodny to protect yourself from the sun this summer.
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
From the EltaMD line comes UV Clear Tinted. UV Clear Tinted is a UV-blocking product with an SPF rating of 46 that provides broad-spectrum protection from sun damage. It’s specially formulated to be used on skin prone to acne, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea.
This oil-free product also nourishes the skin with vitamin B3, lactic acid, and hyaluronic acid for a hydrated glow. This product is also tinted to help blend into your skin tone and eliminate the white “smearing” of traditional sun-blocking products.
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
Also from the EltaMD line, UV Clear is the untinted counterpart to UV Clear tinted. UV Clear is also a broad-spectrum 46 SPF sun protection product that is perfect for sensitive skin.
Just like UV Clear Tinted, UV Clear uses micronized zinc oxide to protect your skin from skin damage and prevent skin cancer. UV Clear provides an untinted option if you’re unconcerned about the color of the product.
Eryfotona Actinica 50+ SPF From ISDIN
Eryfotona Actinica from ISDIN is a daily facial sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection with a 50+ SPF rating. Eryfotona Actinica is designed as a lightweight everyday-use sunscreen that absorbs quickly and provides ultralight emulsion only using minerals. Eryfotona Actincia is infused with vitamin E to provide a nourishing formula that includes Patented DNA Repairsomes® technology, which has been clinically proven to assist in repairing sun-damaged skin.
Anthelios 50 SPF From La Roche-Posay
From La Roche-Posay, Athelios is an all-mineral daily-use sunscreen with 50 SPF and broad-spectrum protection. Athelios is formulated with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for sensitive skin. It uses Cell-Ox Shield® technology to simultaneously protect and nourish the skin with antioxidants.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Lightweight Body Mist SPF 70
This lightweight body mist from Neutrogena provides the convenience of a sprayable sunscreen and the protection of broad-spectrum 70 SPF protection without grease, heaviness, or skin lightening. It is formulated with Neutrogena’s HELIOPLEX® technology to ensure quick absorption with a light feel.
Sunscreen Application Tips
- Before applying, ensure the sunscreen is mixed well by giving it a gentle shake.
- Apply it generously and evenly to all exposed areas of your skin. Be sure to cover commonly overlooked areas like your ears, the back of your neck, and the tops of your feet.
- Allow chemical sunscreens to absorb into your skin for about 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun to maximize their effectiveness.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you’ve been swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to reapply after toweling off as well.
- Consider using additional sun protection measures such as seeking shade during peak sun hours, wearing protective clothing, and using a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Remember, proper application of sunscreen is crucial for safeguarding your skin from harmful UV rays.
